Course content
The class advanced wireless communications offers a description of relevant techniques for data transmission in wireless channels. It starts with a review of basic topics in mobile communications (as the cellular concept, fading channel models, digital modulation techniques). Then, it discusses the performance in fading channels of digital modulation, antenna diversity techniques, state-of-the-art multicarrier modulation techniques, spread spectrum and code division multiple access, ultra wide band modulation. It also considers radio systems for localization and positioning such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) and terrestrial radio localization systems.
- Review of the cellular communication concept
- Mobile wireless channel: channel impulse and frequency response, slow and fast fading and its statistics
- Baseband representation of a digital modulation system
- Performance analysis of digital modulation in fading channels
- Signal-to-noise ratio distribution, average probability of error in Rayleigh fading
- Antenna diversity techniques and performance: selection combining and maximal ratio combining
- Principle of multiple-input multiple-output transmission and effect on system capacity
- Multicarrier modulation: OFDM and Filtered Multitone Modulation techniques.
- Spread spectrum systems: DS-CDMA, multiple access interference, rake receiver
- Ultra wide band modulation
- Principles of radio localization, triangulation and trilateration
- Some elements of wireless standards
Prior knowledge expected
Students are expected to have some preliminary knowledge on:
- digital communication systems
- signal theory and representation of linear systems
- elements of probability, random variables and random processes.
