Inhalt/e
The ongoing processes of digitalization and convergence have influenced and shaped many aspects of everyday life and of the media industry. New technologies allow for new ways of producing, distributing but also using media content and with that, user behavior is changing as are the economic circumstances. More traditional concepts for producing and distributing media content have become increasingly challenged in the face of recent developments, thus also challenging the media industries to adapt and develop new strategies; Multi-platform strategies, transmedia storytelling and media franchises are only some of the keywords that come to mind in this context that will be of relevance in class as well. In order to narrow the broad topic down, we will primarily focus on the case of the film industry, depending on class size and student interest a widening of the focus to include the television industry is a possibility. Against this background we will look at current strategies that can be detected in the film industry (such as trends towards film series, prequels, sequels, book adaptations, new ways of interacting with fans and the audience through e.g. social media, fan fiction and fan involvement, new financing strategies like crowdfunding and a strong focus on merchandise etc.) as ways of coming to terms with the changed circumstances.
