Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

- to understand the multiple interrelations of language and society / the social nature of human beings

- to become familiar with core concepts in sociolinguistics

- to become familiar with research methods to study language and society

- to become more sensitive regarding one's own language use

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

- theoretical input 

- prep. reading and critical discussion of literature

- small projects 'sociolinguistic field work'

Course content

Language and Society (= sociolinguistics) is the study of how language serves and is shaped by society and its regional, ethnic, gendered, age-related and socio-cultural facets. After familiarizing students with core concepts of sociolinguistics, we will look more deeply into the relationship between ethnicity and language, into how speakers of different gender, age or social class vary their language, focus onthe interplay between social media and language and also investigate into the linguistics of sports. In addition, sociolinguistic methods are introduced and applied in the context of small group prous jects.
