LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

In this seminar, the students will explore the richness of sociological theorizing when applied to economic behavior, phenomena, and mechanisms. The students will acquire an understanding for what it means to "see things sociologically". Based on this understanding, they will learn to analyze specific situations from a sociological standpoint, thereby exploring the added value of such an analysis when it comes to economic action.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

The literature that will be treated in the seminar consists of a mixture of plenary texts, which are to be read by all participants, and texts for student presentations. The plenary texts are introduced by the teacher and then discussed in groups along a list of questions prepared by the teacher. Each seminar will provide enough time for intense and open discussion. Finally, students will write a scientific term paper.

Inhalt/e

We will discuss important contributions to the body of sociological thinking, thereby covering authors from roughly two centuries. We will also point out similarities and differences between the various approaches, thereby engaging in a form of critical theorizing.

Prüfungsinformationen

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Prüfungsmethode/n

In seminars, the student performance is assessed continuously. Active participation is mandatory, but you are allowed to miss three sessions of the seminar, provided you send me an excuse in advance per email.

Seminar participants are required to deliver the following performances:

  • A presentation of a sociological text
  • A handout accompanying the presentation
  • Group discussions of the plenary texts
  • A scientific term paper

Prüfungsinhalt/e

The texts for the student presentations are assigned in the first meeting of the seminar. The topic of the scientific term paper has to have a connection to the texts and topics treated in the seminar, but otherwise can be chosen freely by the student.

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe

Student presentations are prepared in groups of two or three. They are expected to take 25 minutes and to be accompanied by a visual display (e.g., Powerpoint). A maximum of 30 points can be achieved.

On the day of your presentation, please bring sufficient copies of a handout of one to two pages that summarizes the main points of the presentation. You can get up to 10 points for it. The content of the handout should be discussed with me during my office hours one week before the presentation.

Students have to read three plenary texts in preparation for the respective seminar meetings

Finally, students will write scientific term papers, for which they get a maximum of 40 points.

Thus, a maximum of 80 can be achieved in this seminar. The grades are calculated in 10% steps from this maximum.
