Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
After successfully completing this lecture course, students will:
have a basic understanding of the main issues, themes, and topics of British social and cultural history
be familiar with dominant and alternative discourses in and of British history, society, and culture
be able to apply their knowledge of British history, society, and culture in their studies of British literary and media texts
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
The course is designed as a weekly lecture course.
Course content
The course aims to trace the major issues, topics, and themes of the social and cultural history of the British Isles from pre-historic times to the present day. From the Stone Age via Roman, Viking/Norse, Anglo-Saxon, and Norman conquests and settlements, we will study the major fault lines, debates, and developments of and in the British Isles as an important (European and global) nation on the Western edge of the European continent. Given current political developments (a Trump presidency in the USA, the debates surrounding 'Brexit', as well as a resurfacing of nationalist tendencies both in Britain and the EU), the course is also intended to examine British relations to its European and transatlantic partners in historical perspective.
Literature
A comprehensive list of British historiography will be provided during the first session of the course. As an interesting, albeit sometimes problematic, introduction, I recommend:
Simon Shama, A History of Britain (2000-2002), together with the BBC documentary series of the same title, which can be found on YouTube, for example.
