LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

Students will be able to articulate some of the major themes, motifs, and stylistics of Native American literature and film. They will get a better understanding of the social and political difficulties and complexities involved in Native American artistic expression, as well as the problems and dangers that may arise from the promotion of an “authentic” aesthetics. They will better comprehend why themes like identity formation, assimilation, hybridity, and resistance are of such central importance to Native American literature and culture.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

Short lecture inputs, extensive discussions of assigned texts and films.

Inhalt/e

Native American fiction offers a unique and often neglected perspective on the American experience. In this block seminar, we will approach this rich storytelling tradition and the culture and history behind it through a number of contemporary novels, short stories, poetry, and films. We will start out with some writings by the Sioux writer Zitkala-Ša, which will give us a first glimpse into Native American history and into the ways in which storytelling can be an expression of personal and cultural identity, while functioning at the same time as a mode of critique and resistance. We will deepen and extend our understanding of this complex relationship in our discussions of two Native American novels: Louise Erdrich’s Tracks and Leslie Marmon Silko’s Ceremony. In addition, we will read short stories by Sherman Alexie and watch several films concerned with the Native American experience. We will discuss how American Indian life is represented in these different cultural texts and what kind of insights into American culture and history they can provide.

Literatur

Louise Erdrich. Tracks. Any edition.

Leslie Marmon Silko. Ceremony. Any edition.

All other course material will be made available in digital form on Moodle.
