Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
Students will acquire a theoretically founded comprehensive understanding of the development of Arthurian literature in English from its beginnings in the Middle Ages to contemporary adaptations. They will develop a deep and contextualised familiarity with signature texts that they can select from a list of eminent examples.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
The format of this class is based on active and egalitarian student participation, and will have a strong workshop character. After discussing the general theoretical framework in the group, team-presentations focusing on specific texts take over. One student introduces the socio-cultural context, and their partner the example text in detail. This is followed up by a student-driven Q&A to prepare for a collaborative in-depth analysis of a selected passage from the text discussed. A willingness to contribute actively to a cooperative, supportive, and inspirational atmosphere is expected from all participants.
Course content
To give us enough time to work with relevant texts and provide us with an overview of the diversity of Arthurial literature, after establishing the basic theoretical framework, we will deal with ten of the following texts (selected by the students):
- Brut (Layamon)
- Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (Pearl Poet)
- The Mabinogion (anon)
- Le Morte d'Arthur (Thomas Malory)
- Idylls of the King (Alfred Tennyson)
- A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court (Mark Twain)
- The Once and Future King (T.H. White)
- The Mists of Avalon (Marion Zimmer Bradley)
- The Warlord Chronicles (Bernard Cornwell)
- Camelot 3000 (Mike W. Barr and Brian Bolland)
- The Fionavar Tapestry (Guy Gavriel Kay)
- Down the Long Wind series (Gillian Bradshaw)
- Pendragon (Greg Stafford)
- Keltia (Cubicle 7, eds.)
During the wrap-up session at the end of the seminar, students will share and constructively discuss each other's ideas for topics for the seminar paper.
Literature
All of the texts dealt with are available commercially and/or in our libary.
Examination information
Examination methodology
Team-presentations will be graded individually for every team member, with the Q&A session and the textual analysis affecting all individual grades equally.
Seminar papers need to have a minumum of 4500 words. Chicago Manual of Style (16th edition, author/date) is expected. Students can also collaborate on projects, as long as each participant hands in individual work amounting to 4500 words that is clearly identifiable.
Examination topic(s)
For the presentations, students can choose to work on text or context for one of the examples.
Students can freely decide on the topic for their seminar paper, as long it is about Arthurian literature in English.
Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations
A student's final grade is an aggregate of the grades for their active participation in class, the team presentations, as well as the seminar paper according to the following key:
50% - Seminar paper
30% - Presentation (individual part, Q&A, analysis)
20% - Active participation
If a student fails in one of these three pillars of assessment, they fail the entire seminar.
