Intendierte Lernergebnisse
This course will provide a survey of the rich history of drama and theatre in Ireland in the 20th century. Taking as its starting point the establishment of a national theatre in Ireland with the foundation of the Abbey Theatre in 1904, the seminar will then proceed to map out some of the major topics and themes in Irish society and culture and their reflection on the theatrical stages of Ireland, from the struggle for independence, the cruelty of poverty, the pains of emigration and exile, the decline of the Anglo-Irish Ascendancy, the power of religion, the longing for land, and the familial and gender conflicts of a people in transition. Among the dramatists discussed will be John Millington Synge, Sean O'Casey, Samuel Beckett, Brendan Behan, Brian Friel, as well as representatives of more current trends in Irish drama such as Martin McDonagh and Enda Walsh.
