Intendierte Lernergebnisse
At the end of this course students should be able to
- examine and interpret written texts critically;
- identify characteristics of the short story genre;
- identify major US American authors of the short story genre;
- identify prevalent themes in the short stories of US American authors;
- engage peers in an academic discussion of literature;
- conduct research to analyze texts;
- evaluate primary and secondary literature for usefulness in writing a paper; and
- analyze literary texts using formal, written academic English

Inhalt/e
This course focuses on the short stories of US American authors--the selection chosen for this course will be diverse in terms of date written/published, gender of the author, region, theme, & race so as to provide students with an overview of the genre as expressed in the US.
- Primary Literature (short stories of US American authors; list available on Moodle)
- Secondary Literature (critical texts on short stories)
Literatur
All required primary and secondary literature will be provided to students electronically via Moodle. A course reader of these required readings will also be available at the ÖH for purchase (price not known at the moment). Extra readings may be provided on Moodle to supplement primary course content.

- Proseminar paper (approx. 3,000 words)
- Leading group discussion(s)
- Class participation
Prüfungsinhalt/e
In consultation with the course instructor, students will select an appropriate academic topic related to US American short stories to expound upon in a proseminar paper (approx. 3,000 words). The paper topic must relate to one of the short stories covered in the course.
Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe
- The proseminar paper must fulfill the guidelines outlined by the department in terms of style and by the course syllabus.
- Leading of and active participation in in-class and Moodle-based discussions of course content.
