Inhalt/e

Inhalt/e
Monster Literature as a genre of literature that intends to evoke a sensation of horror (or terror) in its readers, combining good and evil and presenting the evil side in the form of a monster. But there is so much more than that: We all have things that scare or frighten us - those things may differ from person to person, but there is a common pattern of translating our fears into creatures. More specifically, into monsters.
Even in fairytales, children learn that there is always a mean character who is defeated. Monsters (or villains) are used to create simplified binaries to exaggerate what it is to be good and bad, but in reality the monster is a complex figure: Who would you say is the monster in Frankenstein? The nameless monster itself or the inventor?
Primarily tackling the unique themes and concepts of monster literature and other related topics, the students are encouraged to learn the basic principles and see that there is a whole new perspective regarding every single text. Specific examples, taken from various ages throughout the history of monster literature, highlight the importance of taking a closer look at what makes analysing monsters/villains so fascinating. Common themes embrace duality, loneliness, isolation and enlightenment, and so forth.
Carefully chosen examples which make the subject easier to understand and highlight specific themes and concepts: to be announced (in class).
