LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

The goal of this class is to take a close look at certain developments in post war British culture, the focus being on different migrant perspectives in contemporary British fiction and film. The course offers a historical perspective on British migrant literature and film from the Windrush-generation up to the very present.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

(1) In-depth discussion of literary texts, films and critical texts;

(2) Student presentations;

Inhalt/e

As far as novels are concerned, Sam Selvon's The Lonely Londoners and Andrea Levy's Never Far From Nowhere will be discussed in some detail. While Selvon's text is concerned with new immigrants finding their feet in the London of the 1950s, Andrea Levy's book shifts attention to second generation immigrants living in a transcultural environment. Moreover, the focus is on how migrant perspectives have been dealt with in British film and theatre. The films chosen for closer inspection are My Beautiful Laundrette, East is East, Bend it Like Beckham, Ae Fond Kiss, Yasmin and My Son the Fanatic.
