Intendierte Lernergebnisse

Students will familiarize themselves with the differences between mundane and professional communication, learn methods to analyze professional communication and get to know the various types of professional discourse (such as doctor-patient interaction, psychotherapy, counseling, coaching etc.), where they overlap and where they differ from each other. An additional focus will be on issues such as how to apply linguistic findings in and for the professional practice ('applied linguistics applied'). Finally, students will be more sensitive in their own professional interactions as regards their language and communication

Inhalt/e

This course focuses on professional communication from a discourse analytic and applied linguistic perspective. Both the difference between mundane and professional communication as well as the different types of professional communication (doctor-patient interaction; counseling; coaching; psychotherapy; politics) will be introduced. In addition, a core focus of this seminar is on applied linguistic methods to analyze such professional communication and the question how a cooperation between professional communicators and discourse analysts could look like in the sense of an applied linguistic perspective.
