Inhalt/e

Hollywood – the inventor of great films? Many who are not into film studies might think that all outstanding film ideas originated in Hollywood. However, you might be surprised that the outset of cinematography started in Europe. Within decades the European cinema has become famous for its art and directors, such as the Germans F.W. Murnau, Robert Wiene and Fritz Lang, who invented new methods of film techniques. F.W.’s Murnau’s Nosferatu (1922) can be regarded as the proto-horror film, influencing upcoming Hollywood horror-movies due to its technique, shots and thrill. Thus, admirers of American films, such as Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), Interview with a Vampire (1994) and Blade (1998) will encounter resemblances between these movies and Nosferatu

However, not only films from the Weimar Republic have had in impact on “Tinseltown” (another expression for Hollywood), but also Italian, French and British. Therefore, this course will introduce several movies from these countries, such as F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu, Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita (1960), Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless (1960) and Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now (1973). Although, we will not only talk about the “great names” and their “highbrow” films, but also about filmmakers and productions which have influenced Hollywood too, such as Dario Argento’s Giallo-masterpiece The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970), which can be seen as an impetus for Brian De Palma’s Dressed to Kill (1980) and Paul Verhoeven’s Basic Instinct (1992).

As the European film art has been affecting American films for a long time we are going to analyze which European films and directors have had an immense impact on Hollywood. Moreover, we will discuss and examine cultural and historical events having an importance for this leverage.
