Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

Students get familiar with terminology and definitions of basic concepts related to place making (e.g. space and place, (land)scapes, rural and urban, public and private, identity and alterity). Through the overview of basic literature and presented case-studies, they recognize the ways in which places are produced through social, political, and economic practices. Students are expected to analyse an example of place making of their own choice and present it in class. Reading of selected texts on place making and familiarizing with methodological toolbox (ethnographic methods, spatial techniques) will help them to understand how people and places simultaneously relate to, create, and define each other.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

The course combines lectures and seminars where students discuss selected texts and/or present case-studies of their own choice. The format of the presentation is decided by students in agreement with the lecturer and can range from oral presentations to visual narratives. Students are expected to show understanding of basic theoretical approaches to place making and are encouraged to use creative tools for analysis and presentation of their research.

Course content

Anthropologists were always interested in spatial dimensions of cultural beliefs and practices, but mostly as the background of research, a physical framework of the ethnographic description. Only after the spatial turn in humanities and social sciences the place became a co-creator of social practices and socio-cultural meanings. The course will introduce basic concepts and theoretical approaches to place making. Through case-studies from rural and urban places (e.g. tourism practices, sports and recreation, branding of places, use of public space etc.) it aims to explain how people construct the physical, sensory and/or imaginary spaces as well as make sense of the places they get entangled with. It will draw attention to the relationships between people and their environment as well as reflect the active roles that individuals, groups, and social structures play in creating the places where people live, work, and play. It will provide methodological framework for ethnographic research of place making and for understanding ethnography itself as a place-making practice.
