Inhalt/e

Democratic societies, in order to safeguard democratic public discourse, needs high quality journalism. However, media organizations are in a state of crisis. The traditional private-commercial business model, which heavily relied on advertising, is fragmenting under the pressures of socio-economic restrictions and the digitilization of media technology.  At the same time, Public Service Media are struggling for legitimacy. In this environment of commercialization, de-professionalisation and consolidation, the question of how to safeguard public service journalism re-emerges. As the media market fails, the need for public support of journalism is greater than ever before.

In this course, it will be explored which forms of public funding of the media exist, how they can be typologized and which advantages and disadvantages of these models can be identified. Thus, new forms of public media funding (such as project-based models) will be assessed.  In order to pass this course, the students will have to submit a research paper and present their work within course time.
