LV-Beschreibung

Inhalt/e

As the Brazilian philosopher, Paulo Freire, famously remarked, education for freedom should be thought as the activity of the humanization of the world. However, modern industrial culture, which implicates developments in global techno/media cultures (often claimed as the great achievements of human history to date) can be seen as symptomatic of a biopolitical regime of "human" power that produces unprecedented levels of cultural dehumanization and ecological crises -- an epoch now problematically known as the "Anthropocene." Still, we also bear witness today to countercultural forms of planetary communication and culture that orient beyond the "human" (as the sole agent of meaning in the world) in ways that may offer more sustainable alternatives for earthly life together. In this four-day seminar course, students will present in class the critical research they have conducted prior during the term on the Anthropocene, based on their interests, and we will collectively examine it via relevant cultural and media theories of posthumanism and ecopedagogy. Please note: The bulk of the class will be in English.
