Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
The AIM of the course is for students a) to gain a greater understanding of visual communication and its contexts; b) to enjoy their exploration in this field of study, as well as an in-depth examination and analysis of specific artefacts.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
- Teacher input
- Self-directed research and sharing of findings (knowledge transfer) in the form of "mini-lectures" and general participation. It is vital that everybody contributes what they can. (This shouldn't only be "What can I get out of this course?", but also "What can I give?")
- Group discussions and analyses of chosen materials.
- Students should (individually) also consider making a poster display on a topic of their choice - hopefully to be displayed in the department, should the renovations be completed by the New Year.
Course content
In this course we will explore illustrating and illustrations as an art form. This will cover a wide range of related topics, so from decorated texts to accompanying, explanatory , narrative and experimental illustrations in books for the young (and not so young), to questions of aesthetics in picture books, comics and graphic novels. Students will be able to focus on the work of particular artists; on introducing children to art (and understanding the language of visual messaging); autobiography in visual art form. Concerning the latter, many comics/graphic novels deal in part with their creators' own lives, so we will need to consider the genres of auto/biography/history as well.
A list of topics will be handed out in the first session on 5th Oct.
Literature
A suggested reading list will be given at the beginning of the course.
