Intendierte Lernergebnisse
After successful completion of this seminar, participants are able to:
- describe milestones of the historical ecology of selected European rivers
- apply the knowledge to integrate historical ecology aspects into research projects

Inhalt/e
- Ecological characteristics of river systems. What is specific compared to terrestrial and other aquatic ecosystems?
- Biodiversity of European fish fauna: evolution during the Holocene and historical time
- Long term changes of European river systems (case studies): a) Role of naturally and anthropogenically driven processes in the hydromorphological functioning of rivers, b) Elements for a water pollution history, c) Future trends (global change...)
- Managing and Restoring river systems: What is the role of historical ecology?

Prüfungsmethode/n
Participation and hence, attendance, is mandatory; written Paper (5-10 pages). 50% of your grade is based on your contributions to the discussions in the seminar, 50% on your written paper related to the course and the scientific paper you have to analyze.
