Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

Knowledge of signaling techniques in mobile systems, methods for analyzing performance, methods to improve performance.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Lectures and examples. The class is jointly offered to the students at the University of Udine. Video conference link will be used: half of the lectures will be offered in video conference and half of them with the presence in situ by the teacher.

Course content

The class advanced wireless communications offers a description of relevant techniques for data transmission in wireless channels. It starts with a review of basic topics in mobile communications (as the cellular concept, fading channel models, digital modulation techniques). Then, it discusses the performance in fading channels of digital modulation, antenna diversity techniques, state-of-the-art multicarrier modulation techniques, spread spectrum and code division multiple access, ultra wide band modulation.

  • Review of the cellular communication concept
  • Mobile wireless channel: fading and its statistics
  • Baseband representation of a digital modulation system
  • Performance analysis of digital modulation in fading channels
  • Antenna diversity techniques and performance
  • Multicarrier modulation: OFDM and FMT
  • Spread spectrum systems: DS-CDMA, multiple access interference, rake receiver
  • Ultra wide band modulation
  • Some elements of wireless standards
