Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

This class aims to develop students' ability to speak in a clear, concise fashion, allowing them to interact with their colleagues and express themselves as fully as possible. Conversely, they should also recognise when they need assistance, and seek it both from their peers and the teacher. Up to the mid-term test, "personal statements" (short written summaries) are submitted weekly for a better understanding of English writing structure; after the test, this is replaced by longer readings of computer science articles.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Developing Learner Dialogue is the method used. This allows and requires students to hold conversations, and then to work on those in terms of grammatical accuracy and fullness of expression.

Course content

The main components, with corresponding wordbanks, are Computer and Society, Technical and Social Networks, Technical Terminology (acronyms), English Content structure, Metaphor and Abstraction, Graphics and Animation, Software Engineering, Software Testing, Databases, Robotics, Video-streaming (latency), Sensors and Surveillance (privacy), Artificial Intelligence, Neural Networks, Fuzzy Logic. For more details see Moodle.

Literature

The emphasis in the course is on the quality of discussion and explanation or clarification that can be achieved. Online dictionaries are useful for quick results, but paper dictionaries contain a) more lexicographic knowledge such as frequency of use, and b) the opportunity to "come across" other words.

A corpus-based dictionary: Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English; Longman Language Activator.

Examination information

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Examination methodology

Vocabulary is tested by matching meanings to words and writing sample sentences.

Reading/Pronunciation is tested orally/aurally with deductions for mispronunciations, regular incorrect use of stress and incorrectly formed phonemes.

In the final oral test the student chooses one topic from the list, and the teacher the second. The student makes a brief statement on the topic, and the content develops from there. Points are deducted for errors and weak expression.

In the reading/writing test the time available is 1hr. 20 minutes. The personal statement is 50-80 words in length.

The final oral test lasts 10 minutes for each student.

Examination topic(s)

The topics from the whole semester, resp. half-semester, are available for the students to choose from.

Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations

The scores from the Mid-term test, Vocabulary and Written Statement, are graded and then averaged out with the grades for the  Final Oral Test, and Attendance and Contribution. The standard grading scheme, 1 - 5, is used.
