Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

To become familiar with the laws and law making processes important for financial and business managers operating in foreign markets; to understand how legal reasoning works and how it is applied to international business transactions.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Lectures by U.S. international business lawyer; case studies; in-class discussions.

Course content

Managing a business in today's global economy (and if you are on the internet you are part of the global economy whether or not you know it) requires an understanding of the laws of other nations and the laws governing relationships between sovereign States. This course will examine these laws and law making processes.

  • International trade financing
  • Legal issues in foreign direct investment
  • Bilateral investment treaties
  • Conflict resolution in international investment disputes
  • International Protection of Intellectual Property
  • Domain name dispute resolution at WIPO
  • Legal systems, legal reasoning
  • International law making institutions and their impact on business
  • International private law
