Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

In this foundation course students complete approx. 30 hours of interactive training in English to build up confidence and fluency in using English for business purposes. Written tasks train the basics of reader-friendly communicative business writing. By focussing on the thematic area Carinthia/Carinthian businesses English will be brought "close to home", trained as  a global lingua franca for dealing with local and international concerns.

Targeted learning outcomes include:

1. Grounding in effective persuasive presentation skills - able to hold a short, effective, well-structured business presentation

2. Ability to make effective results-orientated phone calls for business 

3. Ability to write short, focussed, well-structured business emails to handle routine business situations and problem situations

4. Training in using English for relationship and rapport building, social skills.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

  • Communicative interactive methodology (pair and group work) 
  • Presentations training - 5 mini presentations with varying training focus, i.e. delivery, structure, rhetoric, audience contact, visual support
  • Process writing training - feedback loop and editing stages
  • Short teacher and other inputs combined with communicative student tasks
  • Pair work phoning practice
  • Peer and teacher feedback
  • Individual diagnostics of grammar problems, focussed work on selected topics with elearning support
  • Monolingual vocabulary training in relevant fields of business and legala English with elearning training tasks

  • Communicative writing for business  especially e-mails, e.g. inquiries, offers, making arrangements, applications, troubleshooting 
  • Telephoning - information exchange, inquiries, sales calls, calls to deal with problems                                                         
  • Social English - small talk, general and personal topics, conversation                                                         
  • Handing numbers in English, stastical information, price information                                                       
  • Business and tourism sectors in Carinthia                                                        
  • (Carinthian) companies and products  - presenting and discussing companies - facts and figures, performance, products, revenues & profits, strategies for success, problems                                                 
  • Carinthia as a visitor destination - selling Carinthia on the UK market

Examination information

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Examination methodology

Presentation Test (25% of grade);  Telephoning Test (15%);  Written test - email inbox assignment (15%);  Online monolingual vocabulary test (10%); 2 homework assignments (business emails) 15%); Class work and homework assignments (20%).

Examination topic(s)

i. 4-minute business presentation 

ii. 8-minute sales call to set up a sales meeting (call held with instructor, student's own choice of company which they choose to represent) 

iii. Inbox email test: 3 emails (chosen from  5 oder 6)  on business topics, e.g. payment difficulties, mix-ups, applications, internship program (1 hour test, written on the computer) 

iv. Online vocabulary test - 50 monolingual test items, e.g. definitions, prepositions, fixed phrases, word partnerships (see practice tests on Moodle) 

Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 

i. Presentation skills: 20% of total points awarded for each of the following  respectively - delivery; structure and rhetoric; English skills (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, "ownership" of language used; visual support;  audience contact 

ii.Telephoning test: points scheme to assess each stage of the call, communicative effectiveness;  English skills (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency), implementation of principles of effective phoning

iii. Emails test:  Results-oriented structure/organisation of email - presentation and organisation of key information; appropriate courteous tone and reader-friendly style for business emails; standard of language (grammar, vocabulary, appropriacy), use of six standard elements of business emails (subject line, appropriate address, signalling of email topic and purpose, main message, next steps, sign-off).   

iv. Online vocabulary test - range and accuracy, spelling.

v. Class work and homework - points awarded for participation, not assessed for accuracy
