Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
This class aims to develop students' ability to speak in a clear, concise fashion, allowing them to interact with their colleagues and express themselves as fully as possible. Conversely, they should also recognise when they need assistance, and seek it both from their peers and the teacher.
Skills specific to business - social English, presentations, telephoning, short written statements and summaries - build the students' confidence in talking freely.
Examination information
Examination methodology
Vocabulary is tested by writing sample sentences.
Writing is tested through writing personal statements and summaries.
Speaking is graded in terms of fluency, accuracy, content and turn-taking (in presentations: spoken structure).
Examination topic(s)
Students choose their business-oriented content and prepare accordingly.
Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations
The scores from the vocabulary and personal statements are graded, likewise the scores for the telephoning test and summary. These are then averaged out with the grades for attendance and contribution and the presentation. The standard grading scheme, 1-5, is used.
