Students will learn the basic concepts in film studies and acquire a conceptual framework necessary to think, write, and speak about film. They will also learn about crucial moments in American history as they are represented in major Hollywood productions. They will learn how to engage critically with a film from a historical perspective that pays attention to issues of class, race, ethnicity, gender, and environmental issues.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Short lecture inputs, in-class discussion of films and relevant contextual material

Course content

In this proseminar, we will watch and discuss a number of American feature films that engage with important moments in US American history from the post-war period up to the financial crisis. Relevant films include award-winning Hollywood productions such as Good Night and Good Luck, 13 Days, Selma, Born on the 4th of July, Milk, Thunderheart, and Spotlight. We will ask ourselves how we can engage with these films critically while also learning from them about American history.

Literature

All texts and films will be provided by the instructor.
