Instead of individual presentations and seminar papers, the requirements for this seminar are poster presentations and writing up the findings in research reports.

The language of the seminar is English, yet a good command of German is necessary as parts of the data will be in German.

Inhalt/e

Queerness in Austria

This seminar lays the foundation for a (university-wide) research project on queerness in Austria. How is “being queer” constructed, attributed to and perceived in Austria at the beginning of the 21st century?

Thefocus of the seminar is on defining relevant research questions, collecting diversesets of data from different sources (including focus group interviews, biography research, coming out stories in one’s native language vs. in aforeign language such as English, media coverage and many more) and carryingout first analyses of these sets of data applying a broad range of methods(including conversation analysis, critical discourse analysis, narrativeanalysis as well as core linguistic analysis as regards phonology, lexicalvariation, dialect use, codes-switching etc. ).

The goal of the seminar is to draw a first map of queerness in Austria on its many levels of representation and perception. The findings of this seminar serve as basis for a larger research project, whose findings will be presented on national and international conferences and published in relevant journals.
