Inhalt/e
This course examines the role of English as a contact language. While the genesis of English was determined by influences from a variety of languages (e.g. Celtic, Latin, Norse, and Norman French), the recent international outreach of English has turned the tables: Today, English is the most pervasive source of language contact worldwide. The influence of English can be seen on various levels and in different geographical areas from the occurrence of English loanwords in other languages to the formation of contact languages such as English-based Pidgins and Creoles. We will explore the various facets of language contact and discuss different scenarios in which English contributes to the development of other languages.
