Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

- to understand the multiple interrelations of language and society / the social nature of human beings

- to become familiar with core concepts in sociolinguistics

- to become familiar with research methods to study language and society

- to become more sensitive regarding one's own language uses

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

- theoretical input - prep. reading and critical discussion of literature - group work - small projects 'sociolinguistic field work'

Course content

Language and Society (= sociolinguistics) is the study of how language serves and is shaped by society and its regional, ethnic, gendered, age-related etc. facets. We will look into the many varieties of English around the world, into the relationship between ethnicity and language, into how speakers of different gender, age or social class vary their language and focus on social media and its influence on language. In addition, sociolinguistic methods are introduced and applied in the context of small group projects.
