LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

Students will acquire a theoretically founded comprehensive understanding of the development of the Canadian novel from its colonial beginnings in the 1800s to the emergence of a national literature during the 1960s. They will develop a deep and contextualised understanding of signature titles by a selection of the most celebrated examples, with equal consideration given to both female and male authors.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

The format of this class is based on active and egalitarian student participation, and will have a strong workshop character. After discussing the general theoretical framework in the group, team-presentations focusing on specific authors take over. One student introduces the socio-political context, and their partner the example text in detail. This is followed up by a student-driven Q&A to prepare for a collaborative in-depth analysis of a selected passage from the novel discussed. A willingness to contribute actively to a cooperative, supportive, and inspirational atmosphere is expected from all participants.

Inhalt/e

To give us enough time to work with influential texts and provide us with an overview of the diversity of 130 years of Canadian novel-writing, after establishing a basic theoretical framework, we will deal with the following ten authors/texts:

  • Catharine Parr Traill: The Backwoods of Canada (1836)
  • Thomas Chandler Haliburton: The Clockmaker (1836/38/40)
  • Rosanna Leprohon: Antoinette de Mirecourt (1864)
  • James DeMille: A Strange Manuscript Found in a Copper Cylinder (1888)
  • Lucy M. Montgomery: Anne of Green Gables (1908)
  • Hugh MacLennan: Two Solitudes (1945)
  • Mordecai Richler: The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1959)
  • Sheila Watson: The Double Hook (1959)
  • Margaret Laurence: The Stone Angel (1964)
  • Leonard Cohen: Beautiful Losers (1966)

During the wrap-up session at the end of the seminar, students will share and constructively discuss each other's ideas for topics for the seminar paper.

Literatur

All of the novels dealt with are available commercially, some of them even for free.

Prüfungsinformationen

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Prüfungsmethode/n

Team-presentations will be graded individually for every team member, with the Q&A session and the textual analysis affecting all individual grades equally.

Seminar papers need to have a minumum of 5000 words. Chicago Manual of Style (16th edition, author/date) is expected. Students can also collaborate on projects, as long as each participant hands in individual work amounting to 5000 words that is clearly identifiable.

Prüfungsinhalt/e

For the presentations, students can choose to work on text or context for one of the ten examples.

Students can freely decide on the topic for their seminar paper, as long it is about Canadian novels of the time-frame we deal with.

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe

A student's final grade is an aggregate of the grades for their active participation in class, the team-presentations, as well as the seminar paper according to the following key:

50% - Seminar paper

30% - Presentation (individual part, Q&A, analysis)

20% - Active participation

If a student fails in one of these three pillars of assessment, they fail the entire seminar.
