Inhalt/e

With the “Baby Boomer” generation entering the category of old age, increased media attention has been focused on concepts and representations of aging and the older body, particularly women’s bodies. Despite the increased attention to this growing consumer category, older Black women’s experiences in the US have received little attention. Historically, Black women’s bodies have not always been theirs to control within the US, economically, politically, and socially. Yet, these women redefine the representations of their cultural bodies through their everyday lives and creative works. This course will introduce students to some of the major theories within the field of Aging studies and compare these theoretical concepts with the lived experiences and creative practices of older Black women. Exploring the different ways in which ‘successful’ aging is a social construction, we will also look at how the process of aging is made visible (or invisible) in various mainstream media in the US. With these tools, students will be expected to make comparisons between the experiences of older Black with other (marginalized) groups, constructing spaces for (intergenerational) solidarity or conflict.
