Inhalt/e

This course covers the body of twentieth-century American literature, its characteristic techniques, concerns, and major practitioners, emphasizing avant-gardism, pluralism, multilingualism, and media. The authors discussed range from Frost, Stein and Stevens, to Hurston, Plath and Creeley, to Kingston, Ortiz and Silko, with additional lectures on contemporary American writers. The course projects a picture of American literature rooted in the translocal and translingual, a literature that is not confined to national, cultural, or linguistic boundaries.

It is not required to buy the books since all texts discussed in class will be made available on Moodle!

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

In order to successfully pass the course, students are expected to:

participate in in-class discussions
receive a positive grade on the mid-term exam
participate in a student led expert group (presentation + in-class activities) on one of the topics discussed in class
write a pro-seminar paper (2,500 words) on a topic of choice

IMPORTANT:

students need to receive a positive grade for all the four pillars (participation, exam, presentation, final paper) to pass the course
students who fail to attend, without sufficient reason, more than 3 sessions of the course, will automatically receive a fail grade!
