Intended learning outcomes
This proseminar focuses on linguistic landscapes in present-day urban settings. It provides insight into the linguistic landscape as a field of study, which deals with the use of different languages on public display, in particular in multilingual settings. Linguistic cityscapes will be examined from multiple perspectives – theoretical, methodological, and critical. Various approaches to the study of semiotic landscapes, i.e. multimodality, ethnography, intertextuality, contextualisation, will be explored and applied in the analysis of language use in the public domain.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
Input, presentations, discussions in class, the analysis of public signage in groups.
