Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

The aim of this course will be to examine how the issues of nationality and identity have been discussed in Irish theatre through a detailed analysis of selected late nineteenth and early twentieth century plays by the leading Irish dramatists of the two periods. The plays will be examined within their social and political context and the concepts of nationality and identity will be discussed with focus on nation, language and religion as markers of (cultural, national) identity.  At the end of the course, students will have developed a critical understanding on the concepts of nationality and identity, will be able to evaluate the importance of Irish theatre  in the shaping of the Irish national identity, and will have been familiarised with the leading dramatists of Irish theatre who have contributed to the discussions on nationality, identity, language and religion within the Irish context.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

The class will be conducted through lectures, class discussions and the analysis of the selected plays. Students will be expected to come to class having read the assigned material.
