Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

Students will gain an understanding of the mechanics, components and tools of comics as well as acquiring hands-on, in-depth experience for critical analysis of graphic novels.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

short lecture inputs; analysis and discussion of texts from the reading list;

Course content

The Western comics tradition is typically understood as one homogenous group of texts differentiated only by language variations. However, even in Anglophone contexts regional and nationaldistinctions can be found. This class will investigate the variouscharacteristics of regional Western comics traditions, primarily focusing onthe diversity among Anglophone countries, and work out similarities anddifferences between them. The ultimate aim is to provide students with anunderstanding of national and  culturalparticularities expressed in comics form.
