Intended learning outcomes
The aim of this course will be to introduce students to the short story as a literary genre and to familiarise them with the leading American short story writers of the 19th century. At the end of the course, students will have learned the methodology for the analysis of a short story, developed an understanding of the importance of the American short story writers to the development of this literary genre and will be able to analyse a short story with focus on its technical, thematic and stylistic aspects, independent of any tutorial guidance.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
The course will be conducted through lectures and class discussions. Students themselves will be expected to obtain the short stories to be studied in class. All of the short stories listed in the course content can be accessed on the Internet.

Week I: Introduction to the Short Story; its development as a literary genre; focus on the development of the short story in American literature
Week 2: How to analyse a short story
Week 3: Washington Irving: “The Rip Van Winkle” (1819), “The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow” (1820)
