Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

A better understanding of the role of truth and error in philosophy as well as in science.  At best the upheaval of some rocky matters of (dis)course in our thinking. A critical discussion of the way we argue in philosophy and beyond.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

In the first part of the seminar I shall discuss the idea of truth from different perspectives --- from traditinal truth-oriented perspectives and as well from a position critical towards the traditional idea of truth.

In the second part of the seminar the participants will be asked to prepare and present a paper (in English, of course) in which they discuss the idea of truth from a chosen position in philosophy in general, in epistemology or in the philosophy of science.

In the first meeting I shall present a number of topics/themes plus literature from where you can choose the title of your paper.

Course content

This is an English language seminar. It is no hindrance to participate if your English is not perfect - mine is not either - however during the seminar we strictly speak English only.

We discuss one of the central problems of philosophy, the idea of truth. Truth as a central goal of our cognitive efforts. The various theories of truth. When how and why do we introduce the distinction between true and false, truth and error into our discourse.

Literature

I shall bring a number of books and other literature to our first meeting and help you choose a topic for your seminar paper.
