Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

Ability to read scholarly literature for the use of one's own writing, overview over roles of energy (transitions) in history.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

short intro lecture by teacher. Each week, short intro about the context of the article in question by a student, followed by close reading and intensive discussion.

Course content

This is a GUIDED READING course. You will read one article per week and prepare it for class discussion. For one article, you will research the context (author, other relevant literature, etc.), prepare a handout and give a short introduction. You are expected to engage actively in a detailed discussion of all articles.

  • Energy as a key issue and concept of interdisciplinary environmental history
  • Energy transitions in (world) history
  • Energy crises past and present
  • Energy sources and their social and ecological implications
  • Energy conflicts – energy revolutions - energy wars?
  • Energy scarcity and (technological) innovation

Teaching objective

Students learn to critically read scholarly literature in environmental history, they achieve an overview of important ways to address energy (in environmental history).

Prior knowledge expected

A proficiency in English is necessary, as the course is held in English.

Literature

In addition to the literature we discuss, R. White: Chapter I: Knowing Nature through Labor. In: R. White: The Organic Machine: The Remaking of the Columbia River: Hill and Wang, 1995, pp. 3-29 is recommended.
