Diese Lehrveranstaltung richtet sich in erster Linie an die internationalen Studentinnen und Studenten. Sie will eine interdisziplinäre Einführung in zentrale Kapitel des kulturellen und politischen Lebens in Österreich sein. Vier Lehrende aus verschiedenen Fachbereichen der Universität Klagenfurt (Adi Wimmer: Anglistik/Geografie, Primus Kucher: Germanistik, Marco Messier: Psychologie, Valentin Sima: Geschichte) stellen die einzelnen Kapitel vor (hauptsächlich auf Englisch, teils auf Deutsch, wenn ausdrücklich gewünscht.)Topics

This course is primarily aimed at the international exchange students of our university. It is intended as an interdisciplinary introduction to and survey of key-fields of Austrian History and Culture, consisting of different academic areas. The main ideas of this program are focussed on the nexus between space and culture, identity aspects, crucial historical experiences, on literature and the visual arts -- such as architecture and painting -- as well as psychology, Vienna being the birth-place of Freudianism.Topics

- Literature and Identity, identity and literary reflection

- key figures/works in architecture and visual arts
- Austria and its 1000 years of relations to jewish traditions and history, including our participation in the holocaust
- Austria - birthplace of psychoanalysis
- Changes and challenges in social life
- Austrian: its myths, legend and constructs; self perceptions and heteroperceptions
Teaching objective
Students should get an idea of specific aspects of Austrian Culture and realize that there might be differences or parallel phenomena to German and Central European realities.Prior knowledge expected
Enthusiasm and curiosity, an ability and willingness to pose questions and engage in discussion is required. Regular attendance! There is a compulsory mid-term paper to be written (250-350 words) which is weighted 20% towards the final grade.Other materials
