LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

Students will learn the basic concepts in film studies and acquire a conceptual framework necessary to think, write, and speak about film. They will also learn about crucial moments in American history as they are represented in major Hollywood productions and in small independent films. They will learn how to engage critically with a film from a historical perspective that pays attention to issues of class, race, ethnicity, gender, and environmental issues.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

Screenings, short lecture inputs, critical discussion, worksheets, final paper (2000 words)

Aufnahmebedingungen

Attendance of first session on March 2 is MANDATORY!

Inhalt/e

In this proseminar, we will watch and discuss a number of American fiction films that engage with important moments in US American history from the first period of colonization up to the Great Depression. Relevant films include award-winning Hollywood productions such as Michael Mann’s Last of the Mohicans, Steven Spielberg’s Amistad, Edward Zwick’s Glory, John Ford’s Stagecoach, Brian de Palma’s The Untouchables, John Ford’s The Grapes of Wrath, and Roman Polanski’s Chinatown. In addition, we will host a guest lecture by Prof. Salma Monani, who will present us with indigenous perspectives on American history by Native American filmmakers. In this context, we will ask ourselves whether such small independent films offer a form of historical knowledge and experience that is different from those of the highly acclaimed mainstream productions.
