LV-Beschreibung

Inhalt/e

The American writer Henry James was a master of narrative technique. Written in realist style, his short stories, novellas and novels dissect the mores and morals of 19th century Americans, especially of those who dare to venture abroad and immerse themselves in the unfamiliar environments of Europe. This seminar will explore both the complex interior worlds of James’s characters and the no less complex storyworlds that envelop them at home and abroad, seducing them into various kinds of boundary crossings that not only question their social status but sometimes endanger their very lives. We will read a selection of shorter and long fiction and watch two film adaptations that take us to New York (Washington Square, 1880/1997), Vevey and Rome (Daisy Miller, 1879), Paris (The American, 1877), London (“The Beast in the Jungle,” 1903) and Venice (The Wings of the Dove, 1902/1997). We will also read some of James’s theoretical deliberations on the art of the novel, asking ourselves how they relate to his creation of rich and compelling fictional worlds.
