Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

The classes will be mostly hands-on. In the first part of the course the typical class will include a discussion about the theory behind the construction and use of corpora. In the later stages the more practical details of how to use learner corpora and corpus search tools and how to construct and annotate a corpus will be addressed.

Inhalt/e

A corpus is a large collection of language data found in digital form, usually available online. It is used as an empirical basis for a broad range of linguistic applications and research, and it has become an essential tool in almost every kind of language analysis. The course is aimed to give an introduction into the notion and place of corpora in the study of language and to provide insight into practical and theoretical issues regarding both the use and construction of a corpus. The course then expands on this by focusing on construction and use of learner corpora. This course is intended for students with little computer knowledge and some linguistic background and it is open to all students with an interest in language, in any discipline. No programming experience is required. The questions this course will address are along the following: - what is corpora and what are the main characteristics; - which different types of corpora exist; - how many we have access to online and where they can be found and used; - what are the different tools for searching through corpora that allow you to investigate various linguistic questions; - what basic tests you need to apply to see if your investigation results are statistically significant; and - what are the nuances of using learner corpora.

Lehrziel

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: - demonstrate knowledge of basic corpus terms and concepts; - demonstrate a competence in using online corpora and corpus analysis tools; - demonstrate knowledge of the basic quantitative procedures in interpreting corpus data; and - demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate current basic research in the field of corpus linguistics.

Erwartete Vorkenntnisse

Students must have passed both Pflichtfach Aufbaustudium Linguistics and Vertiefungsstudium Linguistics.

Prüfungsinformationen

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Prüfungsinhalt/e

1. Practical Assignments: using, creating and tagging corpora done in-class and as homework; and 2. Seminar Paper: an instance of independent practical work 4500-6000 words (must be passed).

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe

Practical Assignments 50 pts. Seminar Paper 50 pts. Total 100 pts.
