Students learn... • how to turn their ideas into a workable project • how to use prewriting strategies to find and narrow down a topic • to understand the difference between a ‘topic’ and a ‘thesis statement/research question’ • how and where to carry out research effectively and independently • how to structure their theses properly and accordingly • how to write a proposal and abstract • to understand the principles of citation and the nature of plagiarism • how to use academic language appropriately • how to talk about their own projects • how to organise and reflect on their own writing process and environmentLehrmethodik inkl. This course is aimed at advanced students of English and American Studies (ideally - but not limited to - those who plan to write their BA theses this semester or are already in the process). Participants will be ‘guided’ through the main stages of writing a BA thesis, produce a research proposal and abstract, and work continuously on their own projects.Themen

- • Finding and narrowing down a topic (prewriting strategies)
- • Developing a thesis statement/research question
- • Research skills (including reading and note-taking)
- • Structuring and Formatting
- • Citation (direct quote, paraphrasing; Chicago Style)

- • Revising and editing

Lehrziel
• to increase students’ motivation and confidence in regard to writing research papers and other texts that are connected to it (proposal, abstract) • to provide students with a space to share and discuss their own ideas as well as their writing habits • to raise students’ awareness of the importance of giving and receiving feedback • to help students avoid ‘writer’s block’ and procrastination by encouraging them to work on their projects continuallyPrüfungsinformationen
