Vorträge und Projekte

Course content

Topics

  • Einführung in Multimedia-Kommunikation, Internet QoS und QoE: Motivation, Terminologie, An-/Herausforderungen, Prinzipien
  • Video-Codierung und Adaption: Überblick, Prinzipien, Adaptionsmöglichkeiten
  • Internet QoS-Mechanismen: Integrated Services (IntServ), Differentiated Services (DiffServ), Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), Traffic Engineering (TE)
  • Protokolle für Echtzeit-Datentransfer, u.a. Real-Time Transport / Control Protocol (RTP/RTCP), Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), verwandte Protokolle
  • Adaptives Medien-Streaming: "Push"-Verfahren
  • Adaptives Medien-Streaming: "Pull"-Verfahren, Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH)
  • Aktuelle Trends, Fallstudien/Anwendungen und Projekte zu adaptiver Übertragung multimedialer Daten (A/V-Streaming)

Teaching objective

Prior knowledge expected

* Betriebssysteme * Rechnernetze und Netzwerkprogrammierung

Lectures and assignments/projects

Course content

The course is based on, and further developed from, a previous course entitled "Multimedia Communication and Internet QoS". The course covers the fundamentals of multimedia communication and quality of service (QoS) in networks (terminology, requirements, parameters, mechanisms, protocols) as well as current and potential future QoS support and media adaptation techniques, particularly in the Internet and in wireless networks. The lectures on the concepts will be complemented by assignments, small-scale projects and hands-on experiments with software systems that require or implement QoS and/or media adaptation mechanisms.

Topics

  • Introduction to Multimedia Communication, Internet QoS and QoE: Motivation, Terminology, Requirements, Principles
  • Video Coding and Adaptation: Overview, Principles, Adaptation Options
  • Internet QoS Mechanisms: Integrated Services (IntServ), Differentiated Services (DiffServ), Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), Traffic Engineering (TE)
  • Protocols for Real-time Data Transfer, among them Real-Time Transport / Control Protocol (RTP/RTCP), Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), Related Protocols
  • Adaptive Media Streaming: "Push" Approaches
  • Adaptive Media Streaming: "Pull" Approaches, Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH)
  • Current Trends, Case Studies, and Projects in Adaptive Multimedia Data Transfer (A/V-Streaming)

Teaching objective

The students will ... * ... become familiar with the fundamentals of multimedia communication and quality of service (QoS) in networks (terminology, requirements, parameters, mechanisms, protocols); * ... get to know current and potential future QoS support in networks and media adaptation techniques (particularly “in the Internet“ and in wireless networks); * ... become familar with mechanisms and protocols for the transfer and adaptation of real-time data (“multimedia“) in networks; * ... get some hands-on experience in multimedia communication and adaptation as well as QoS concepts in the course of assignments and/or small-scale projects; * ... acquire expertise required for further projects (e.g., practical term, master thesis) in the area of multimedia systems and communication.

Prior knowledge expected

* Operating Systems (Betriebssysteme) * Computer Networks and Network Programming (Rechnernetze und Netzwerkprogrammierung)

Other materials

Lecture slides and additional material will be provided in a Moodle course throughout the semester.
