Overview of actuation and sensing principles for autonomous systems and robotics.

Course content

This course focuses on sensors and actuators, in particular with respect to autonomous systems and robotics . 

Topics include:

Actuators

  • Pneumatic and hydraulic actuators
  • Principles and characteristics of DC, brushless DC, synchronous, stepper and asynchronous motors
  • Solenoid, piezoelectric, thermal, magnetostrictive, electrostrictive actuators, linear motors
  • Non-mechanical actuators

Sensors (Focus on robotics and autonomous systems)

  • Proprioception
  • Magnetoresisitive, inductive, magnetic, magnetostrictive, capacitive, resistive, optical, ultrasonic, thermal sensors
  • Exteroception
  • MEMS inertial (acceleration, gyroscope), pressure and compass sensors, sensor integration
  • Beacon based sensing
  • Time of Flight sensors
  • ToF Camera, Laser Range Finder, Structured Light
  • Radar

Smart Sensors and Actuators/Smart Transducers

  • Components of Smart Sensors and Actuators
