Course content

While productive land is limited globally, human demands for land-based products and services are increasing: Food demand is rising along with growing population numbers and affluence. Various policies aim to increase the amount of biomass produced for energy provision. Land demand for biodiversity conservation and carbon sequestration could also rise if respective policies are implemented. This seminar is focused on discussing current cutting-edge research papers on global land-use competition from a socioecological perspective. Participants are expected to read each text, comment on it and discuss it in the seminaro. Each text is presented by one or two students to facilitate discussion.

Topics

  • What is land use competition
  • Social and economic impacts of land-use competition
  • Ecological and GHG impacts resulting from land-use competition
  • Food vs. fuel
