Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
Prior knowledge expected

At the end of the module students are able to: - Identify real-world problems as dynamical systems - Apply and understand the basic principles of the theory - Solve planar autonomous ODEs on a qualitative levelTeaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
BlackboardCourse content
A dynamical system is the mathematical abstraction of a temporally changing phenomenon. Examples include the position and velocity of an object in motion, the biomass of an insect population, a viral concentration in the human body, or temperature, air pressure and wind velocity in a particular point on our planet (the "weather"). The course captures various basic principles of this very versatile area in order to describe and understand the long-term behaviour of dynamical systems.Topics
- Discrete and Continuous Dynamical Systems
- Invariant Sets
- Limit Sets and Attractors
- Poincaré-Bendixson theory
- Linearization
Teaching objective
Identification of a real-world phenomena as a dynamical system. Obtaining analytical skills to describe the qualitative behaviour of a dynamical system. Understanding the features of planar autonomous differential equations.Prior knowledge expected
