Course content

Video game production today is the economically leading cultural industry in western nations and has finally managed to outsell both the film and music industries around 2010. With already almost half of gamers female and the largest age cohort of gamers at 36+, video games have truly arrived at the centre of our societies, and can no longer be seen as purely a fringe- or youth cultural issue. It is therefore necessary to take a closer look at the medium, its mechanics and cultural logic, as well as its socio-cultural impact. Game Studies are a quickly growing discipline, or rather “a multidisciplinary field of study and learning” as Frans Mäyrä puts it in his Introduction to Game Studies (2008: 6). Since video games are essentially multimedial story games, academics from many different disciplines have brought their own perspectives and competences into the field, ranging from the technological and computer sciences, to media studies, the social sciences, and even the humanities. As central artefacts of what Henry Jenkins terms Convergence Culture (2006), all of these different approaches are also necessary to do video games justice in their intricate complexity. It is the declared aim of this interdisciplinary lecture series to bring together scholars from all faculties of this university, as well as guest speakers of both academic and practical backgrounds to provide our students with spotlights on the various faces of video games as a digital medium and a form of cultural expression. Maybe this will help us understand why Jane McGonigal chose such a daring subtitle for her seminal book Reality Is Broken (2011): “Why games make us better and how they can change the world”.
