Intended learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will have been introduced to and gained experience with alternatives to 'old-fashioned' classroom practices. They will have developed, conducted and presented a teaching project promoting innovative approaches to ELT and evaluated their results critically.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

- learner-centred teaching approach - research and literature review - mini teaching project - presentation - group-discussion - self-evaluation

Course content

In this course students will plan and perform a research project at a school or other educational establishment. The project will be based on a topic from the list below. The experiences gained through the project will be presented in class and made subject of a group discussion.

This course will start on 17. March 2014.

  • Supporting learner autonomy and self-directed learning:
  • - PBL (Problem Based Learning)
  • - humanistic teaching philosophies (e.g. Freinet, Montessori, Dalton Plan, etc.)
  • - learner-centred teaching materials
  • Neue Mittelschule
  • CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning)
  • The lexical approach
  • CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning)
  • The advantages of heterogeneous groups

Teaching objective

- critical review of literature on current approaches to language teaching - reflection on pedagogical, sociological and psychological influences as well as cultural, political and economic aspects - development of teaching experience - trying out newly discovered approaches in the classroom - comparison between theory and practice - draw conclusions from self-evaluation and group-discussion

Prior knowledge expected

Successful completion of: 'Introduction to English and American Studies', 'Language Consolidation and Development', and 'Introduction to English Language Teaching'

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Examination topic(s)

Attendance is mandatory. The seminar paper (4,500 - 6,000 words) will consist of: - literature review (< 2,000 words) - project report - critical evaluation of project

- outline of research project and its presentation (20%), - presentation of research project (20%), and - seminar paper (60%)
