Inhalt/e

This introductory course is aimed at providing some general information about the nature of the English language and its most basic components. The course will look at how sounds are produced, how words and sentences are built and try to outline all the rules that govern these processes. It will further investigate meaning in language on various levels as well as providing a short insight into areas of applied linguistics, historical linguistics, corpus linguistics, sociolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, and psycholinguistics.

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: - demonstrate knowledge of linguistic notions linked to the course topics; - demonstrate a competence in discussing, evaluating and independently analyzing the covered linguistic phenomena; and - demonstrate a better knowledge of the general global picture of the field of English linguistics.

Erwartete Vorkenntnisse

Students should have passed the STEOP courses (or Introduction to English Studies).
