Course Information

Course content

The course focuses on the role of the state in promoting long-term technological progress and industrial leadership. Throughout history, a nation’s rise to dominance has invariably been followed by its fall; the dominant powers of today are not the same ones that controlled the world three hundred years ago. In the same manner, economic dominance has usually been fleeting, as leading nations have routinely been caught up and surpassed by challengers. In this course we will be looking at Schumpeterian growth – currently the most important source of economic growth – which credits the ability to use technological progress for the benefit of industrial leadership as the key motor of national development and economic success. We will go back and look at the growth experiences of some of the major powers over the past 250 years and try to explain the political economy behind their success and / or failure.

Teaching objective

The course seeks to provide the students with an overview of the political economy of major structural societal change over the past few centuries, on political and economic drivers and obstacles for structural change, within traditional industries and within energy industries. While courses on political economy very often focus on technological drivers and on economic drivers, one of the objectives of this course is to put the focus back on the political in „political economy“, and thus look at how technological and economic drivers are inscribed in a political logic and contingent on a beneficial political environment.
