Henry Tudor's victory over the (recently rediscovered) Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485 not only ended the 30 years of the War of the Roses, nor the 330 years of Plantagenet rule over England, some scholars argue that it was also the watershed moment that ended the almost 1000 years of British history often subsumed under the term The Middle Ages. Even if this claim might be oversimplified, the socio-cultural and political developments under the reign of Henry VII, and even more so under his son Henry VIII and his grand-daughter Elizabeth I, radically changed Britain and its cultures: Renaissance idea(l)s - belatedly in comparison to Italy, France, or even Germany - came to dominate British minds. In this class, we will trace the long historical and cultural way of Britons from after the collapse of Roman Britain through Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, Norman, and Plantagenet Britain, up until the Hundred Years' War and the War of the Roses that ended with the ascension of House Tudor, and ultimately Empire. During this time, the seed of a common British identity sown, ironically enough, by the Roman occupiers grew and incorporated many regional and cultural identities. We will follow this process through literary texts, some of which written during the times in question, others by later authors, and our focus will be on the politics of representation exhibited in the texts we read. Discussing classics and later popular texts on an equal footing, we will understand how the Middle Ages were 'made' in literature, and to what purpose they were used at different points in history.
